Swing for the Fences Mentorship Matters in Your Sales Career

Swing for the Fences Mentorship Matters in Your Sales Career Base of the ninth inning. Two outs. Full check. Score tied. Sprinter on third base. I took care of business, planting my spikes into the mud. Getting into my batting position, I confronted the pitcher â€" frowning at his eyes as I inexactly held the wooden bat and foreseen the pitch. Would it be a fastball, lurching down the center, or would it be a curve, turning toward home plate? Whatever kind of pitch, I should have been prepared for anything. The game is on the line, I reminded myself in my mind as globules of sweat streamed down my temple. Lets bring one of the young men home and get the success. The pitcher twisted up and tossed a stinging, 90-mile-per-hour fastball. My preferred sort of pitch. Stepping forward with my left leg, I constrained my bodys whole quality into slugging the ball airborne toward the divider. The wooden bat broke like a parting lumber, and, upon contact, my partner thrusted off third base like a runner. Go, go, go, I hollered in my mind to the ball as it flawlessly spun against the dull summer sky. Go, go, go. The fans immediately rose from their seats and cheered as they saw the ball sail over the wall. Grand slam. Match dominated. Im a previous expert baseball player for the Boston Red Sox, having played with the association as an infielder from 1978-1980. There was nothing better than playing for my old neighborhood group and gaining from a portion of the Soxs most noteworthy players, for example, Ted Williams and Carl Yaz Yastrzemski â€" legends I grew up looking as a child. My affection for baseball started when I was a little child. I adored being outside and playing get with any individual who might throw a ball with me. In the event that I could handle a couple of grounders from somebody, far better. My Little League a very long time in Westwood, Massachusetts, transformed into university years at the University of Maine in Orono, playing the infield. I was drafted by the Red Sox in June 1978. Sick always remember that second, lounging around the kitchen table with the Red Sox scout and my whole family, including my granddad â€" a tremendous Sox aficionado â€" as I marked my agreement with the group. It was a mind boggling sentiment of delight as I started transforming an enthusiasm into a profession. Playing proficient baseball made a larger number of recollections than I couldve envisioned. Sick always remember when Ted Williams helped me improve my swing (Keep your head despite everything, utilize your hips, and swing with a slight uppercut, he said to me), or when I watched Yaz take batting practice in the enclosures at 8 a.m. at spring preparing after over 20 years in the major groups. These encounters helped me gain proficiency with a great deal about cooperation, commitment to your activity, practice, and not underestimating anything. By the day's end, it took the entire group to make sure about the triumph â€" and that is valid in my vocation today. At the point when it came time for me to hang up my shirt, I normally inclined toward working in deals. Deals is much the same as baseball â€" it takes a whole group to support prospects or fortify customer connections, it commands difficult work to accomplish the necessary outcomes, and it makes an excursion that is exciting to seek after. Through the span of my 25+ years in deals, Ive found that achievement lies in drafting the best group. For me, its everything about finding the correct players who comprehend what their activity involves and the stuff to accomplish objectives. At the point when I select players for my group, I ensure theyre coachable. Will they put in a great deal of planning? Will they be composed in their work? Will they have the vitality â€" and the energy â€" for their possibilities, their clients, and their organization? Is it accurate to say that they are available to input to help improve their exhibition? Above all, they should be a cooperative person. They should be happy to help different individuals from the group improve their aptitudes and attempt any assignments asked of them, regardless of if those activities appear to be too little or outside their set of working responsibilities. My group is just in the same class as the individuals on it. Theyll have chances to flourish and take on all the more testing activities, and theyll have chances to gain from their errors. That is the excitement of the pursuit. In baseball, striking out is a piece of the game. Truth be told, Ive struck out a greater number of times than Ive jumped on base. Such is reality. What has the greatest effect is an inspirational demeanor. All things considered, a batting normal during the 300s is viewed as phenomenal in baseball â€" and that equivalents hitting the ball around 30 percent of when at bat. To achieve the most noteworthy conceivable batting normal, deals groups consistently need to get ready however much as could be expected. Theyll need to examine everything about possibilities or clients to comprehend their plans of action, their organization goals, their serious positions, and their market procedures. Ive found that the more you can foresee ahead of time, the more youll interface when entering the hitters box â€" which means, the more youll jump on base and the all the more a fruitful youll become. In todays profoundly serious condition, its vital to accumulate however much data as could be expected to perform at the most ideal level and convey to possibilities and clients. I cannot start to tally how frequently I depended on pioneers to assist me with improving my game â€" like that time Ted Williams instructed me to improve my swing, or seeing Yazs devotion to his art in the confines after each one of those years. Its players like Williams and Yaz who can help transform great players into extraordinary players by sharing what theyve found out about the game. While practice is a fundamental component of progress, mentorship is a significantly increasingly significant part. When were confronted with high-pressure circumstances â€" like taking care of business with the game on the line, pitching a marquee prospect, or driving a significant customer meeting â€" I advise my group to rehearse all aspects of the game, including the territories that dont normally come without any problem. One basic approach to do this is by finding a tutor â€" somebody whose business and initiative abilities you appreciate. Proactively search them out and let them realize that you need to turn out to be better at prospecting, account the board, or customer relations â€" whichever aptitude you need to sharpen. Dont feel that you need to do everything yourself. Guides and pioneers are here to help. Theyre here to mentor you to triumph. At whatever point somebody approaches me for exhortation about how to prevail in deals, I reveal to them a story I heard when one Red Sox pitcher showed up in Boston just because. He ventured off the transport and approached somebody in the city for the most ideal approach to get to Fenway Park. That people answer? Practice, man, practice. On the off chance that youre ready to rehearse â€" and depend on the shrewdness of the pioneers you intend to follow â€" youll have the option to hit homers and build up a top pick deals profession. Take care of business, face the pitcher, and swing for the wall. Jimmy Fabiano is an overseeing executive, venture arrangements, for Bullhorn.

One Key Revision (And Two New Books) By Dawn Prochovnic

by Dawn Babb Prochovnic When my high-school-aged son was a toddler, I recall a day when he was in a particularly silly mood, running through the house with a diaper on his bottom, a bandana on his head, and a pirate’s patch over one eye. He looked at me with an ornery twinkle in his uncovered eye, and asked, in his best, pirate-y gruff toddler voice, “Where Does a Pirate Go Potty?” I knew immediately this was the title for a book, and I started drafting a manuscript soon after. Over the next couple of years, the manuscript went through many critiques and many revisions, but the core story about the universal childhood experience of, “I gotta go. Now!” told from the perspective of a pirate on a quest to find just the right spot to leave his…uh, treasure…remained consistent throughout. In 2006/2007 I submitted the story for professional critiques and participated in opportunities to read the story aloud at various SCBWI events. The story was a crowd-pleaser, and several editors expressed interest and invited me to follow up with a submission. In 2007, one of those editors took the manuscript to her editorial meeting, and then to acquisitions. She was extremely enthusiastic about the story, and I felt confident a contract offer was on the horizon. But that was not to be. I was thrown by the emotional roller coaster of being so close to making my first sale, then having it fall apart, but I refused to give up on the story. I continued submitting it and bringing it to conferences for awhile, but eventually my focus shifted to new stories and new submissions. After signing contracts for my STORY TIME WITH SIGNS AND RHYMES series, my attention shifted to editing and launching those books. Even so, every now and then, I’d re-read my Pirate Potty manuscript, and tinker around with it some. I never stopped loving it. Fast forward to 2015. I was invited to write a story for Oregon Reads Aloud, a keepsake collection of read-aloud stories for children, published in celebration of SMART’s (Start Making a Reader Today) 25th anniversary (Graphic Arts Books, 2016). I was grateful for the opportunity. I gladly contributed a story for the project and actively participated in the promotional events for the book. In October of 2016, I drove 3 ½ hours from Portland to Seattle to spend a couple of hours signing copies of Oregon Reads Aloud in the Graphic Arts Books booth during the Pacific NW Book Association conference. During my time in the booth, I got to know some of the folks at Graphic Arts and familiarized myself with their regionally-focused list. I remember thinking, “These are such nice people. I’d love to work with them on other books. I wish I had a manuscript with a regional theme that I could submit to them.” Over the course of the next year, I continued wishing that I had a book that was a good fit for Graphic Arts. Not surprisingly, wishing did not make it so. One day, as I re-read and reflected on my beloved Pirate Potty story, I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could westernize this story?” That moment was a turning point. I got all of the “feels” that you get when you have a good idea, and I started making notes. I challenged myself to replace the pirate character with a different character, and the idea of a cowboy soon came to mind. I tried plugging “Cowboy” elements into the story in place of “Pirate” elements, but I was not keen on the changes that came out of that exercise. I think there were a few different reasons the cowboy changes weren’t working, but the biggest issue was that during this phase of re-vision, I was essentially trying to insert a cowboy into the pirate’s story. The roots of my story were based on that memorable moment when my son posed the silly question, “Where Does a Pirate Go Potty?,” and I “saw” a very specific Pirate character in my mind every time I sat with the story. I couldn’t simply replace that character with a cowboy. At one point, I pulled out my old files from back when the Pirate Potty story “almost sold,” and I re-read what the editor wrote to me. She had said, “…Everyone in our group just loved it and thought it’d be a slam dunk, but Sales thought that a pirate potty book would only appeal to boys, thus cutting our readership in half. I totally disagree with them…but without their support, we just can’t move forward…” I, too, disagreed with the assessment that only boys would be interested in a Pirate Potty book, but this time as I re-read those words, a new question emerged: What about a cowgirl? I found myself immediately transported to a time when my college-aged daughter was in grade school, and her wardrobe included a bright pink pair of cowgirl boots. I paged through old photos and found the one I was looking for: A photo of my daughter dressed-up for her western-themed grade school carnival. I finally had the kernel of a new character in my mind’s eye. This character was unique and separate from the Pirate character that I couldn’t let go of, and she had her own story to tell. WHERE DOES A COWGIRL GO POTTY? spilled onto the page with urgency. And all of a sudden (and about a dozen years later) I had two potty stories I loved, one with a decidedly western theme. I identified several publishers that might be a good fit for Cowgirl, and I developed a submission plan. Graphic Arts Books was at the top of the list. I submitted WHERE DOES A COWGIRL GO POTTY? to Graphic Arts Books in 2017, and I’m happy to share that it’s scheduled to hit bookshelves in the fall of 2019…along with WHERE DOES A PIRATE GO POTTY? Yarrr! They loved that story, too. One key revision, and two new books. Yee-Ha! Dawn Babb Prochovnic is the author of multiple picture books including Where Does a Cowgirl Go Potty? and Where Does a Pirate Go Potty? (forthcoming, 2019) and a frequent presenter at schools, libraries, and educational conferences. Mid-Level Resume Writing

Mid-Level Resume WritingFirst, let me tell you about the wonderful world of mid-level resume writing. I know that if you have a great job that is waiting for you, and that is definitely in the national market, then this type of resume writing will not be necessary. And I will also tell you that this can be done if you are employed at a company where there is no need to prove that you belong. The only one that needs this is the employer who can verify your employment and skills. If your employer is willing to let you write a mid-level resume that will be sent to top organizations, then you will want to be sure that you use the top of the line resume writing software that can assist you in setting up your cover letter, and that you have a nice starting page of information. You will also want to look for examples of resumes that other employers have used as references.Self review is very important to make sure that your self-assessment is spot on. It is essential to know that when you fi rst begin writing resumes, there is a tendency to rush through it and to forget that there is going to be someone who is going to be reading your work. With the right amount of research, and due to the fact that most people who are doing this for the first time do not know the first thing about writing for top positions, you can ensure that you are not falling into the trap of using any wording that was written in a corporate job ad and instead utilize the same sort of language that would best fit the position you are applying for. With the right training, you can also determine what is out of style for now and what is not, so that you are able to remain current with all the changes in hiring practices. When writing resumes, you should always use simple paragraphs that include your contact information, education, work experience, education, or training, and a bio that includes a few lines of your job description. Of course, most people do not have any educational credentials, and it i s very important to write them in as simply as possible. You should always remember that a person is much more likely to read a resume that includes a few years of experience as opposed to one that lists experience from one to ten years. The kind of experience you have is not necessarily indicative of the position you are applying for, and many of the employers may have written that information down in your job application without realizing it.Take the time to ensure that your resume looks professional and follows the standard conventions for resumes, as well as the law. Do not write a resume that contains wording that is not searchable, that is not indexed, or that was written on paper.Above all, a good mid-level resume can give you the upper hand over other applicants who are trying to get a chance to apply for the position. No matter how skilled or qualified you are, if you have never taken a job interview, then you probably cannot be considered for it. Try not to get discouraged, and be sure to listen to your inner voice as you write your resume.

Maximizing Interview Chemistry Connection Part 2 - Hire Imaging

Augmenting Interview Chemistry Connection â€" Part 2 - Hire Imaging This is a proceeded with post around the significant job science plays in talking. Meeting Chemistry: What right? I've been a lifelong mentor for a long time. I tune in whatever individuals are letting me knowâ€"on the two sides of the meeting procedure. A few things have changed, impacted by innovation, financial aspects and well, change itself. A few things have not. Science and association have not. Science and association come down to individuals loving individuals. Feeling good with each other. Feeling this could go to the following level. Here are two additional tips as gathered from basically tuning in to what the individuals who recruit are stating: Meeting Chemistry: 2 Important Tips Cast the correct picture. Building science has a lot to do with demeanor and picture. Clinicians disclose to us that the manner in which we hope to be dealt with influences the manner in which we are dealt with. In this way, it would bode well to shape assumptions regarding each interview. I hear reliably from those on the recruiting end that they regularly arrive at a positive or negative choice inside the initial five minutes of a meeting. This is frequently alluded to as the radiance and pitchfork effects. Why is this valid? Accepting that you're a competitor with the correct accreditations for the activity, you either make a decent beginning impression or you don't. What influences this chemistry? Basically, individuals quietly respond to the picture you anticipate: how you dress, your stance and non-verbal communication, the things you state about any subject, and the manner in which you answer questions. What sort of picture do you think you anticipate? All things consider ed, every one of us is ceaselessly anticipating a picture. What's more, in spite of the fact that your physical appearance talks before you state a word, this picture comes to past. It's passing on a demeanor of excitement, honesty and certainty without presumption. Offer earnest commendations. Do you like accepting commendations? Truly, don't a large portion of us? Along these lines, before the meeting, read or converse with individuals about the association and reveal some beneficial comments. In the initial couple of moments, let the questioner realize that you heard great things. Showing you know something about the organization is an outsider commendation, where you're passing on uplifting news you've gotten notification from others. You can applaud their physical premises, their kin, their showcasing, their administration, their items, or different things. It's imperative to be explicit. Don't simply say that individuals you know are dazzled by the item. Discussion concerning why they are dazzled. We all prefer to hear the points of interest around what others like about us expertly. By giving subtleties, you show that you have thought about the subject, and that your commendation isn't simply disparaging or void flattery. Yes; while o nline networking or a downturn economy may impact our pursuit of employment, science based association in a meeting has consistently been there. That correct picture and genuine adulation supported by information and sprinkled with respectability, have consistently made a difference in a meeting. My next and last tips regarding this matter will cover how addressingâ€"both those you ask and are askedâ€"can manufacture talk with science and association. On the off chance that you missed Tips #1 and #2, here they are. Do you have any encounters or thoughts you'd prefer to share on anticipating the correct picture or offering praises in a meeting circumstance? Never wear a retrogressive baseball top to a meeting except if going after the position of umpire. ~ Dan Zevin Photo: Lewis Minor

U.S. Unemployment Rate Is Low. Why Cant People Find Jobs

U.S. Joblessness Rate Is Low. For what reason Can't People Find Jobs Nathan Bonds' limit came following 19 months of joblessness, 23 meetings, and 200 applications. His list of qualifications had been dismissed by a string of the lowest pay permitted by law occupationsâ€"including the neighborhood L.L. Bean and J. Group outletsâ€"and Bonds, who lives in Cranston, R.I., was scratching by on transitory development work. When a companion offered him a $10-an-hour conveyance gig, he could scarcely bear the cost of leaseâ€"significantly less the charges expected to refresh his permit. So he didn't land that position either. That was my absolute bottom, the 41-year-old dad of five says. It resembled my life was in a tight clamp, and I was unable to push ahead. Bonds, a previous quality director at an assembling plant, is an exceptionally gifted laborer in an industry needing profoundly talented specialists. His long episode of joblessness, and his battle to look for some kind of employment even at the lowest pay permitted by law, contradicts the heavenly occupations reports that have ruled features in the course of recent years. It's likewise not so exceptional. As of April 2017, 1.6 million jobless Americans have been unemployed for a half year or more, as per information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Almost a million have been jobless for longer than a year. Long haul joblessness, as it's called, is certifiably not another wonder. In 2010, it topped at 6.8 million and has been slanting descending in the wake of the downturn. Yet, those numbers offer little solace to the 22.6% of jobless Americans who fall into that class todayâ€"a proportion that remaining parts determinedly high contrasted with pre-emergency levels. Since the time financial specialists began following this figure in 1948, the portion of long haul jobless to add up to jobless has topped 20% just at the tallness of a downturn or in its immediate outcome. In the event that the official joblessness rate incorporated the a great many individuals working low maintenance since they can't discover all day work, or the individuals who need to work however haven't searched for a vocation in at any rate a month, the positions of long haul jobless would be significantly higher. Presently specialists stress that an enormous level of long haul work searchers have been pushed out of the market totally â€" and that the new presidential organization is sick prepared to rope them back in. It's unfamiliar domain to have this degree of long haul joblessness this out of sight downturn, says Ofer Sharone, a humanist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst who contemplates work patterns. Something new is continuing, making it harder for individuals who have been out of the market for quite a while. *** Nathan Bonds invests energy at home with his little girl Lily, spouse Tamara, and girls Ava and Sierra (from left). Rebecca Greenfield for MONEY It's difficult to pinpoint precisely what's keeping individuals jobless for such a long time, however financial analysts have a couple of hypotheses. Employing segregation is one chance. Regularly, work searchers with long vocation holes face inborn inclination from bosses, who accept their aptitudes are corroded or that they are in any case unemployable. What's more, new innovation, similar to candidate following frameworks that sort through the high volume of list of qualifications each activity posting gets, can contrarily affect the drawn out jobless. Certain screens, similar to those that approach candidates for dates of business, can sift through up-and-comers who have been searching for work for a long time. Inclination happens constantly, says Linda Sharkey, coauthor of The Future-Proof Workplace and a HR master who has directed recruiting for organizations like HP and GE Capital. On the off chance that somebody doesn't show work for a while, their application can get kicked out, never to come around. Another regularly refered to guilty party is the supposed aptitudes hole, the possibility that a huge number of occupations go unfilled due to the uniqueness between the abilities managers need and those candidates have. Not every person concurs that such a hole exists, and there's a scope of feelings about how to fix it among the individuals who do. On the off chance that the hole exists, however, the drawn out jobless are bound to fall into it, says Princeton market analyst Alan Krueger. Aptitudes crumble the more extended activity searchers are out of the working environment, Krueger says. That regularly drives the drawn out jobless to confront specific challenges. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics Whatever the explanation, hills of exploration show that the chances of finding a new position are verifiably harder for the drawn out jobless than it is for other people. One examination from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston says a vocation searcher's odds of looking for some kind of employment drop significantly following a half year of joblessness. Another examination from the Brookings Institutionâ€"drove by Krueger and two different scientistsâ€"found that following 15 months, the drawn out jobless are more than twice as liable to have left the market as to have subsided into consistent, all day work. More seasoned specialists are at a specific burden, says Joseph Carbone, president and CEO of the Bridgeport, Conn., occupations advancement bunch The WorkPlace. In case you're 50 or more seasoned, you face a practically invulnerable mass of separation, he says. Organizations have an extremely thin perspective on what they need. At the point when you stroll into a meeting with a great deal of silver hair, it's for the most part over rapidly. For 60-year-old Stephen Wayman of Landing, N.J., who has two degrees in mechanical building and over 20 years of experience, the hole on his list of references resembles a red letter. Wayman lost his employment as executive of offices and land in 2015 and has battled to locate another. To keep occupied, he shows a class on venture the board at a nearby college and takes online courses in PC programming. I've been asked, Why should we enlist you when we have different candidates who haven't been jobless?, he says. I disclose to them I've been utilizing this chance to learn new things. I have new information on software engineering; I've gotten into educating. These meetings work out positively, or he figures they do, yet he presently can't seem to get an offer. Stephen Wayman conducts a Skype meeting with his vocation mentor, gave to him to free through the Rutgers University New Start Career Network. Rebecca Greenfield for MONEY Who recognizes what individuals truly think, and why they don't welcome you on, he says. I presume more youthful [hiring managers] don't assume the best about me. Wayman doesn't have small kids to accommodate, yet he's living off his benefits and investment accountâ€"something he didn't anticipate doing at age 60. However, more than the absence of a compensation, Wayman passes up on having a chance to develop. I sense that I have a great deal of gas left in the tank, he says. *** Nathan Bonds (right) converses with Christian Cowan, the inside executive for Polaris MEP. Rebecca Greenfield for MONEY Nathan Bonds' story has a glad completion. In March, he handled a job as a venture director for the assembling consultancy Polaris MEP, with assistance from Platform to Employment (P2E)â€" a program from Carbone's The WorkPlace, which utilizes government and private financing for work preparing and wage-appropriation endeavors. Other workforce organizations, similar to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Trainingâ€"whose Real Jobs RI program gives organizations awards to recruit and train work searchersâ€"depend intensely on a blend of state and government reserves. Securities' new business profits by such subsidizing. On the off chance that President Trump's government spending goes as proposed, states will be compelled to accomplish more with less. Workforce offices, work focuses, and eventually the drawn out jobless could endure. Under the organization's latest 2018 spending proposition, the Department of Labor would lose $2.4 billion, or 19.8% of its working financial plan. The spending plan explicitly calls for less government support for work preparing and business administration equation concedes, a move that puts the center projects at in excess of 2,500 American Job Centers in danger. Those focuses give a scope of free administrations for all activity searchers, similar to vocation advising, list of qualifications building, and quest for new employment help. A few places additionally give explicit effort and instructing to the drawn out jobless and space for long haul joblessness advancement gatherings to meet. Some of extra awards that fall under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which was marked by President Obama in 2014 and reserves state programs for separated specialists, would likewise be decreased. The proposition additionally destroys government subsidizing for the Department of Commerce's Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), a private-open organization that helps little and medium size makers like Bonds' new boss contend. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015 Notwithstanding the cuts, the spending diagram grows a few projects intended to help the jobless, similar to the Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment program, which helps individuals accepting joblessness benefits reappear the workforce. The president's proposition isn't unchangeable. In any case, it sparkles a light on what long haul joblessness could resemble in the Trump timeâ€"and it's totally different based on what was guaranteed on the battle field. In a July 2016 tweet, at that point up-and-comer Trump recognized that drawn out joblessness is to be sure an issue (We are enduring the most exceedingly awful long haul joblessness over the most recent 70 years. I need changeâ€"Crooked Hillary Clinton doesn't). Yet, specialists state his activities demonstrate something else. The message that runs over is we couldn't care less, Carbone says. A ton of the people who need help to help conquer boundaries to circumstance are simply not going to get it. *** Jobless legal advisor Karen Johnson vacuums her family room while her significant other and youngsters are grinding away

Now Offering Interview Coaching for Technical Interviews

Now Offering Interview Coaching for Technical Interviews Now Offering Interview Coaching for Technical Interviews Have an upcoming software engineering, developer, or QA testing job interview? Seattle Interview Coach now offers interview coaching for technical interviews. Read on for more details on Jon, the newest member of our interview coaching team. Jon focuses on technical job interviews. For a list of tough programming interview questions, refer to our list of 140 Google interview questions. I’d like to introduce myself as the newest member of the Seattle Interview Coach team. I’ve been brought on to provide some expert advice to those of you facing the prospect of going through a technical interview. I’ve been in the software field for the last 7 years and am currently an engineering manager at Amazon.com. More importantly, however, throughout my career I’ve been continuously interested in technical interviews and have had a wide variety of experience sitting on both sides of the table. I currently conduct about 100 technical interviews a year and know what interviewers are really looking for when conducting a screening. The majority of candidates I interview end up not receiving job offers because they mess up some technical portion of the interview. In the majority of these cases, however, it has nothing to do with the intelligence or ability of the candidates, but rather their lack of appropriate preparation for a technical interview. Invariably, people forget details about basic data structures or forget how to tackle problem solving questions â€" this leads to a downward spiral during the interview. For example, image how you’d deal with this question: Given an input stream of integers of an unknown length (the stream, not the length of the integers), derive an algorithm that can return one of the numbers already seen in the stream at random and with a normal distribution when a client asks for it â€" you only have 1MB of memory to work with. So, for example, if your algorithm was running along and has processed 100 numbers already and a client asks for a random number, your algorithm should return one of the 100 numbers that you’ve already processed with equal 1/100 probability. This question usually proves to be a stumper, but if proper problem solving techniques are used it becomes a lot more manageable â€" certainly not easy, but manageable. First off, you need to recognize that the 1MB requirement is simply a made up number. For problems like this that have large data sets, it’s tempting to start by looking at the big picture, but that’s not really the way you want to solve them. I suggest looking at the problem from the absolute simplest case and building from there. If you’ve processed one integer and then are asked to return a number at random, what do you need to do? Well, that’s simple, you need to return the one number that you’ve seen with 100% probability. What if you’ve seen two numbers? Then you’ll return the first number with 50% probability or the second with 50% probability. At 3? 33.3…% for each of the numbers you’ve seen. Now a pattern is emerging. For each number you process, you need to be ready to return one of them with a probability of 1/n. Great, now we’re getting somewhere, but how do we implement this? You’re dealing with a, possibly, infinite stream of numbers so it doesn’t matter if you have 1MB of space or 1TB or space, you can’t “remember” all of the numbers you’ve seen. So, since you have limited space let’s see if we can solve the problem by only remembering one number at a time, the one that you’d return if you were asked to at any given moment. For each number that you read from the stream you’ll need to roll an N sided die to decide whether that becomes your new return number or not, if it is then you can forget whatever the old return number was and store the new one in its place. For the first number you see you’ll have a 1/1 probability of making that your return number. When you see the second you have a ½ chance of replacing the first number with the second number as your return number, with the third it’s a 1/3 chance that you’ll rep lace the return number. I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to write out the inductive proof to show that this actually works, but that’s the answer. Note that this isn’t a particularly good interview question as it requires some specific probability knowledge to solve. But I’ve seen it asked before, and it helps illustrate that having a good approach to problem solving can mean the difference between floundering on a question and at least making reasonable progress. If you have a technical interview coming up and want to be better prepared, contact us. Youll benefit from a mock technical interview with honest and frank feedback. Youll also get a study plan and give pointers on how to solve common types of technical interview questions.

Happy Bosses Day! Time to Quit Your Job - Copeland Coaching

Happy Bosses Day! Time to Quit Your Job Happy Bosses Day! Time to Quit Your Job. National Bosses Day was last Friday. And, if you’re like most people, you got your boss a plant, took them out to lunch, or maybe just sent a friendly e-mail thanking them for everything they do. From the outside, it probably looked fairly routine. But, in reality, did you do these nice things because you have an awesome boss who you adore? No. Chances are, you would be happier at your job if you never had to see your boss again. You probably just participated in Bosses Day so you wouldn’t be in the doghouse with your boss, or your coworkers. It was social pressure more than anything else; another “Hallmark Holiday” as they say. Did you know that bad bosses are the number one reason we quit our jobs? It’s true! I’ve noticed this trend in many, many of the clients I work with. When I ask what’s motivating them to want to leave their current company, they rarely say it’s a lack of money or vacation or anything else. At least 80% of the time, they start off with how unhappy they are with their terrible boss. Forbes made an interesting point about this very issue. Author Eric Jackson said, “…you would probably be surprised to know that more Americans are quitting their jobs today than at any point in the past 4 years. In March (2014), 2.475 million Americans quit their jobs. This has been steadily increasing recently from a low in late 2009 (just after the financial collapse finally bottomed out) from a monthly rate of 1.7 million quits a month.” This means that even though our economy is still struggling, you have had enough. You’re ready to take a chance, even if it feels scary. And, you don’t want to deal with that terrible boss for one more Bosses Day, or any other day for that matter. Jackson cites that some of the reasons people dislike their bosses are: They overload their best people with too many responsibilities They’re micro-managers They’re never around They’re not in touch with how some of their hires or promotions are driving their best people nuts They’ve never given their people a sense of where they can go in their careers They run terrible meetings They communicate that they care more about themselves than the team They never give the team a big picture vision of where their group is heading or they are constantly changing the big picture Does this sound familiar? Does your boss drive you crazy for one (or possibly eight) of these reasons? If so, the time to start on your job search is now. Do it while you still have good footing at your current job, so you’ll have more control over selecting a new one that you like. The thing you should take away from this experience is this: your boss really does matter. There is almost nobody (other than you) who can influence your career so much. They can give you a raise or a promotion. They can pay to send you for continuing education. And, they can give you a pay cut, a demotion, or even fire you. When you interview at a company, try to think of yourself as interviewing your boss as much as they interview you. Will they be supportive? Will they want to compete with you? Are they someone you could spend eight hours a day with? Finding a good boss will help to guarantee that your next experience is a positive one! I hope these tips have helped you. LinkedIn for Job Search (DVD)

LinkedIn for Job Search (DVD) A few weeks ago I started shipping the second edition of the LinkedIn for Job Seekers DVD. I gotta tell you, humbly, that this $49.95 LinkedIn DVD is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. It is 3 solid hours of webinar-like instruction.  This is not talking-head stuff you literally watch over my shoulder (you watch my screen) as I go over LinkedIn and show you, as a job seeker, how to use LinkedIn. The funny thing is this is not just for job seekers (unless you believe we are ALL job seekers).  If you want to learn how to optimize LinkedIn, doesnt a three hour webinar make sense? The DVD is broken up into 22 different segments/chapters so you dont have to digest 3 hours of content in one sitting.  Heres the breakdown (the length is minutes:seconds): 0 Introduction to LinkedIn for Job Seekers (length: 5:46) lays the foundation for using LinkedIn in a job search.  Principles can be applied to using Facebook, Twitter, etc. 1 Home Page (length: 9:53) there are many opportunities to connect with your contacts but its hard to know who and when and why.  On the home page you can find the answers to all of those. Also a discussion on the LinkedIn status and more. 2 Profile: Above the Fold (length: 22:21) the longest video there is just too much to talk about here and have it shorter. Optimize your Profile so people find you and your personal brand drips off of the monitor.  Many, many people miss opportunities on this part of LinkedIn. 3 Profile: Summary (length: 7:52) how long should your LinkedIn Summary be? What should it include?  This segment goes beyond put in all your keywords to help you create a Summary that will be read and will help solidify your personal brand. Thats more than 45 minutes already that alone is worth the price but there is SO MUCH MORE! 4 Profile: Below the Fold (length: 9:34) after the summary your Profile still goes on what do you need to care about?  How do you make sure the rest of the LinkedIn Profile helps you get found and your brand shines through?  What Groups do you show (hint: not all of them!)? 5 Profile: Applications (length 6:11) what are LinkedIn Applications and how do you decide which ones to use (and which ones to avoid)?  Theres great opportunity here to strengthen your LinkedIn Profile OR muddy up your brand and distract the reader. 6 Profile: Add a Video (length 4:00) Have you seen videos that play right on someones LinkedIn Profile?  Its really cool, and its fairly easy to add a video to your Profile.  This is NOT for everyone, but if you find (or create) a video that strengthens your brand you should consider adding it to your Profile! Were just getting started thats an hour of solid content, most of which geared to help you be found (mostly passive strategy so far) theres 2 hours left, though!) 7  Companies (9:13) a relatively new feature in LinkedIn, there is GOLD in the Companies feature.  This section helps you figure out WHO to contact and gives you a reason (talking points) to contact them its very, very powerful.  If you arent using this feature you are missing out. 8  Groups (19:28) the second longest segment this is not a new section in LinkedIn but the features have become more robust.  Learn the ins-and-outs of LinkedIn Groups, what to do, what to avoid, and how to get value out of joining relevant Groups. 9  Jobs (6:47) think you should avoid job boards in your job search? Think again!  Dont necessarily apply to all jobs you think you qualify for on job boards but use them as a tool.  The LinkedIn job board has features that no other job board does learn why you should spend some of your online job search time here. 10  Advanced People Search (8:25) I ignored the people search, and the advanced people search for too long, but one of the value props of LinkedIn is FINDING PEOPLE.  Use this powerful search tool to find contacts that you should network with or reach out to.  Need to do informational interviews?  Find the right people in your target companies using this search page.  Theres more than meets the eye here. 11  Communicating with Others (7:01) Whether you reach out to someone with a LinkedIn Invitation, an InMail or a LinkedIn Introduction, there are certain things you should include in your communication.  Develop a message that is read and replied to, not just ignored or questioned as spam.  Dont blow your chance to create a solid relationship. 12  Recommendations (4:09) Do you need to get Recommendations? What do you do with them after you have them?  How do you get them? How do you give a solid Recommendation?  Find out in this segment. Were up to TWO SOLID HOURS of content.  By this time you are getting proficient at LinkedIn and really understand how it fits into your overall social strategy.  Its not about wasting time online, its about leveraging these tools to work for you! 13  Answers: Asking Questions (11:48) Asking questions is one of the most powerful proactive tactics you can employ in LinkedIn.  Why?  It shares your brand and helps grow your network.  It can help you nurture individual relationships.  This segment shows you how, why, and what to do to make sure you dont waste your efforts on LinkedIn Answers. 14  Answers: Answering Questions (11:00) The other part of LinkedIn Answers is simply answering questions.  In this segment we talk about what questions you should answer, how to answer them so your brand and expertise comes across strong, and where the major tie-in with your LinkedIn Profile is. 15  Manage your Settings (7:47) if you get too much email from LinkedIn (and your Connections) you need to watch this section.  Also, privacy considerations and some critical information to ensure your LinkedIn Profile is yours forever (not your bosss). 16  Browse Connections (3:43) Learn how to find other key contacts based on who your Contacts know.  This is a very powerful part of LinkedIn and is worth spending time on on a regular basis. 17  BONUS Now, 10 Things to Do (1:57) overwhelmed?  Me too!  But here are 10 things to do right now This section was designed to help ensure you take action, and I help you know where to start.  Short segment but it might be the thing to get you to the next level. 18  BONUS 20 Questions (12:02) this was FUN a rapid-fire format of questions and answers how to, why, etc.  These are 20 questions I hear all the time, with my responses. 19  BONUS Export Contacts (2:38) I am a strong advocate of exporting your Contacts regularly heres how to do it (dont miss the next two segments). 20 BONUS Cleaning the Export (7:35) once you export your Contacts you end up with a csv file that is . in need of cleaning.  There are unused columns and junk data I show you how to clean up your data so you can use it later. 21  BONUS Importing into JibberJobber (5:14) one thing to do with your Contacts is to put them into a useable CRM system (like JibberJobber).  I show you how to do it with JibberJobber but much of what I show you here could be helpful if you are importing into Salesforce, ACT!, etc. WOW seriously, 3 hours.
